Mental Health Integration

Breaking the Silence β€” Integrating Mental Health into Every Conversation

Mental health is health. Yet in Ghana, and across much of West Africa, mental health conditions remain heavily stigmatized, grossly underfunded, and poorly understood. At ROBB Foundation, we are determined to change that.

Our work in mental health is rooted in the understanding that persons with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities have unique mental health needs that are often overlooked within both the disability and mental health sectors. Equally, the parents, caregivers, and families who support them carry significant emotional burdens that deserve attention and care.

What We Do:

We raise awareness on the intersection of developmental disability and mental wellbeing, helping communities and health systems understand that mental health support is not separate from disability care β€” it is essential to it. ROBBFoundation was founded by Mavis Opoku Asantewaa, a Community Mental Health Officer, and that professional grounding continues to shape our approach.

Through our Redefining Mental Health Discourse Through Music events, we use creative platforms to destigmatize mental health conversations and reach young people in accessible, culturally resonant ways. We engage expectant mothers on the psychological dimensions of raising a child with Down syndrome, and we support families with information, referrals, and community connections.

We also collaborate with the Mental Health Authority of Ghana and the Ministry of Health to advocate for increased resources, inclusive mental health policies, and community-level mental health services that serve persons with disabilities.

Our Vision:

A Ghana where mental health is treated as a fundamental right β€” where every person, including those with developmental disabilities, can access compassionate, culturally appropriate, and affordable mental health care without shame or stigma.
