Empowering Voices, Protecting Rights: A Community-Based Intervention to Address Reproductive Health and Gender-Based Violence Among Persons with Intellectual Disabilities in the Greater Accra Region, Ghana.
Persons with intellectual disabilities (PWIDs) in Ghana, particularly in the Greater Accra Region, face a disproportionately high risk of gender-based violence (GBV) and significant barriers to accessing essential reproductive health services. This vulnerability is exacerbated by societal stigma, limited understanding of their rights, and a lack of accessible support systems. Cultural norms often perpetuate misconceptions about the sexuality of PWIDs, leading to their exclusion from sexual and reproductive health education and services. Existing data, while limited, suggests a high prevalence of sexual abuse and exploitation, often going unreported due to fear and lack of accessible reporting mechanisms. This initiative outlines a community-based intervention to address these critical issues, focusing on empowerment, education, and access to support.
